The founders of the Black Excellence Community Mikaal Hurry and Sade Sharas shine a spotlight on the people of color who have been working, motivating and inspiring others in the Poughkeepsie community. The money raised during their annual gala event is then used to create scholarships for Poughkeepsie High School Seniors to help them continue their educational journey.

The very first gala took place in October of 2019. It was a night of elegance and words of wisdom and history from keynote speaker Linda Melton-Man. The honorees for 2019 included Rising Icon Honoree Hamar Clarke, Civic Leadership Honoree Yvonne Flower and Keystone of the Community Honoree Doreen "Dodie" Henry. Local artists also graced the stage with their talent and performances at Revel 32 in Poughkeepsie, NY.

After the celebration of the following year in 2020, Poughkeepsie high school seniors Anniyah Coates, Tyler Manrique, and Kharel James were celebrated and awarded scholarship money that was raised during the 2019 gala. The awarding ceremony took place in form of a car caravan full of joy and excitement for the students and their future goals. The car caravan included Poughkeepsie teachers, Black Excellence Community committee members and the honorees of 2019.
